Chearsley CC Match Report 16/7/16
Chearsley 1st XI hosted Banbury 4th XI this week, whilst the 2nd XI had a week off due to the odd number of teams in Division 9. On winning the toss visiting Captain Mark Pallett chose to bat first on what looked like an excellent batting wicket.
Banbury made a good start and were 75-1 before veteran spinner Ken Baker started to chip away at the middle order. Despite his figures of 3-41, Banbury were well placed at 175-4 after 34 overs with a score of 250 plus looking highly likely. A fine second spell from Ed Holland, who ended with figures of 6-53 kept the visitors to 219 all out. Skipper, Matt Pallett, was the best of the Banbury batsman making a fluent 76.
In response, Chearsley made a good start and were 45 without loss when James Veness fell for 20. The turning point in the match came when the hosts were 113-2 and the in-form Andy Crichton was unluckily run out backing-up for 53. From this point onwards wickets fell steadily until the villagers were 162-9, still needing 58 to win. However, George Miller and Ken Baker weren’t going to give up without a fight! With Miller taking the lead in the partnership, the pair ticked off over half of the required runs in a partnership of 32 before Miller was finally out LBW for 48. Ed Bradbury (4-31) and Chris Philips (3-49) both bowled well for the guests.
Chearsley will look to break the habit of losing out in close contests when they travel to Cumnor next week. The 2nd XI will be back in action at home to Buckingham Town 4th XI.
